Drift sits on the banks of the Myall River, where kangaroos graze morning and night, ospreys nest, dolphins pass the jetty, and dingoes walk the dunes. Here's who else you might meet.

around Drift

Eastern grey kangaroos graze the lawn most days — dawn and dusk are your best odds. A pair of ospreys nest within sight of the house, dolphins work the river channel, shorebirds own the sand at low tide, and echidnas and tawny frogmouths turn up closer to home than you'd think. Yellow-tailed black cockatoos feed in the casuarinas right in front of the house — you'll hear their calls from the balcony before you even think to look for them. Dingoes keep to themselves these days — you're most likely to see one just north of Hawks Nest along Mungo Brush Road, or on the beach towards Little Gibber inside Myall Lakes National Park. And if you're extra lucky, there's a slim chance of spotting a koala, usually at night or in the early dawn.
